Surf spots along Sri Lanka's south coast

the bay

Sri Lanka's easiest wave to learn on

A long, slow beach break wrapped by two headlands, and the reason most people start here.

Weligama means "sandy village," and its wide, curved bay is exactly that: a long stretch of sand wrapped by two headlands that soften almost every swell before it reaches shore. The waves peel slowly and predictably left and right off a sandbar, giving beginners time to find their feet and intermediate surfers a forgiving wall to practice turns on.

The main season runs roughly from November to April, when south-west monsoon swells wrap into the bay. The water sits warm year round, usually in the high twenties Celsius, so a rash guard is normally all you need. On smaller or off-season days, Weligama still holds a rideable wave more often than most of the south coast, which is why it has become Sri Lanka's most popular place to learn.
